Wind advisory issued for Modesto as storm sweeps Northern California. Here’s what to know

Batten down the hatches, Modesto.

On Thursday, the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory much of the Sacramento Valley, including the Modesto area.

Winds will be reach 15 to 25 mph, the advisory said, with gusts up to 45 mph.

The high winds will be accompanied by rain showers, the weather service said in an X post on Thursday, with the “heaviest precipitation” expected Thursday night.

The weather service warned of “slick roads and ponding of water on roadways” as well as rising water levels at rivers, creeks and streams.

When is wind advisory in effect?

The wind advisory will be in effect from 4 p.m. Thursday through 1 a.m. Friday, the weather service said.

Which areas could be impacted?

Areas affected by the wind advisory include the central and southern sections of the Sacramento Valley as well as the northern San Joaquin Valley.

That includes the cities of Modesto, Stockton and Sacramento, as well as Chico, Fairfield, Grass Valley, Jackson, Marysville, Oroville, Suisun and Yuba City.

“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects,” the weather service said. “Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.”

The weather agency advised people use extra caution while driving, especially in high-profile vehicles.

What’s in the weather forecast for Modesto?

Modesto was expected to be mostly cloudy on Thursday, with a high temperature near 57 degrees and wind gusts as high as 28 mph, according to the weather service’s latest seven-day forecast.

During the day, Modesto had a 20% chance of rain, with new precipitation amounts of less than a 10th of an inch possible.

There’s a 50% chance of showers on Thursday night, mainly after 4 a.m., bringing between a 10th to a quarter-inch of new rainfall.

The forecast calls for an overnight low temperature around 46 degrees and winds of 16 to 21 mph.

“Winds could gust as high as 41 mph,” the weather service said.

Friday was expected to be mostly sunny with a 20% chance of showers before 2 p.m.

The high will be near 59, and the overnight low will be around 39.

Heading into the weekend, Modesto should see sunny skies on Saturday with a high near 56 and wind gusts as high as 20 mph. The overnight low will be around 35.

Areas of frost were forecast on Sunday after 4 a.m. and before 8 a.m.

Otherwise, Sunday will be sunny with a high near 55 and an overnight low around 34.

Modesto could see widespread frost, mainly after 5 a.m. Monday, followed by clear skies.

The high will be near 56 and the low will be around 35.

When will rain return?

There’s a slight chance of showers on Tuesday, the weather service said, along with areas of frost.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 54 and an overnight low around 34.

Wednesday will bring another chance of showers, with a high near 52.
