Heat warning issued for Stanislaus County. Here’s the weather forecast for Fourth of July

Excessive Heat Watch

As the first heat wave of the year intensified Saturday, the National Weather Service had a heat warning in effect for the Northern San Joaquin Valley until 11 p.m. Sunday.

The temperature in Modesto on Saturday reached 106 degrees, according to Modesto Irrigation District.

Stanislaus County residents are facing another sizzler on Sunday, also forecast for 106. A fourth straight day of triple-digit temperatures (102 degrees) is expected Monday. The high temperature Friday was 102.

The Weather Service said dangerously hot conditions are expected throughout the Sacramento Valley and San Joaquin Valley with regional temperatures ranging between 105 and 112 degrees.

The forecast for Fourth of July activities on Tuesday is 98 degrees, signaling a cooling pattern in the Northern San Joaquin. According to the Weather Service, temperatures will decline through next week, dipping to 89 degrees on Friday.

While the heat wave continues to grip the region, there’s an increased risk of heat-related illness, especially for those working or recreating outdoors. Rivers filled with runoff from the Sierra Mountains are still running fast with cold water, creating hazardous conditions in some places.

The warning signs for heat exhaustion are dizziness, thirst, excessive sweating, nausea and weakness. Anyone with those symptoms should move to a cooler location, loosen clothing, sip water and put cool or wet clothes on their body. Health officials said heat stroke, including symptoms of throbbing headache, nausea and vomiting, 103-plus body temperature, hot and dry skin and rapid pulse, is a medical emergency. Call 911.

The Modesto Library, at 1500 I St., is a designated cooling center on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Other places for cooling off are the Ceres Community Center, 2701 4th St., and libraries in Turlock, Salida, Ceres, Empire, Hughson, Oakdale, Patterson and Newman. The centers are closed Sunday.
