Triple-digit heat to finally hit Modesto this week. How the year compares to some others

Weather update

A warming trend in Modesto this week is expected to bring the first triple-digit temperatures of the year, according to the National Weather Service. The seven-day forecast says Friday will be sunny and hot, with “a high near 100,” and then Saturday — the first day of July — could see the thermometer hit 101.

According to Modesto Irrigation District weather records, the last time the city was at or above the century mark was Sept. 9, when the high was 102 degrees. That was the end of nine-day string of triple-digit days that reached as high as 113 degrees.

According to staff at the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office, the average first date of a temperature at or above 100 degrees in Modesto is June 11. The earliest date on record for triple-digit heat in the city is April 30, 1981, and the latest is July 27, 1992.

Here’s a look at the days leading up to the hotter days:

Sunday is expected to reach near 83 degrees, with a northwest wind around 10 mph. It should get windier Sunday night: 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Monday’s high should be near 86, with a northwest wind of 6 to 9 mph.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 85.

Wednesday will be sunny, with a high near 89.

Thursday, another clear day, should hit near 95.
