Cooler days, chance of rain return to Modesto area. Here’s what to expect this week

April showers were a letdown for May flowers this year.

After an unusually wet winter for the Modesto area, the first full month of spring brought just 0.03 inches of rain, according to the Modesto Irrigation District. Historically, April has an average rainfall of 0.95 inches, MID weather archives show.

The first week of May might help deliver what April did not. A National Weather Service forecast released Sunday morning said Modesto may get between a 10th and a quarter inch of rain between Monday and Saturday.

The highest chance of rain — and it’s only 30% — comes Tuesday, the NWS seven-day forecast says. There’s even a chance of thunderstorms after 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Here’s a day-by-day look at how May — a month that gets an average of 0.48 inches of rain — will get underway:

  • Monday should be sunny, with a high near 66 and a west wind of 6 to 11 mph, the weather service says. Monday night has a 20% chance of showers after 11 p.m. Less than a 10th of an inch of rain is expected.
  • The chance of rain increases to 30% Tuesday. Otherwise, the day is expected to be partly sunny, with a high near 65. A south-southeast wind of 8 to 13 mph may have gusts as high as 20 mph.
  • Wednesday, there’s a 20% chance of showers after 11 a.m. It will be partly sunny, with a high near 68. Wednesday night brings a slight chance of showers before 11 p.m.
  • The slight chance of showers continues Thursday, after 11 a.m. The day otherwise will be partly sunny, with a high near 67.
  • Friday also will be partly sunny, with a high near 68.

  • And Saturday is predicted to be mostly sunny, with a high near 70.

April also ended with temperatures that were unseasonably high. April 28 reached 92 degrees, according to MID. That’s the second-highest temperature on record for that date. The record is 93 degrees in 2007. The average high temperature for the date is 75 degrees.

Compare that to the 66 degrees predicted for Monday, May 1. MID archives say the historical average high for the date is 77 degrees, the hottest on record is 102 degrees in 1947, and the coldest is 59 degrees in 1955.
