Cold weather’s not down for the count. A temperature in Modesto this week could set record

National Weather Service

After a handful of sunny, warmer days, winter reminds us that spring still is nearly a month away.

The National Weather Service forecast for Modesto says Tuesday, with an expected high near 65 degrees, will conclude a five-day run of days in the 60s.

Wednesday will bring an anticipated drop to 52 degrees as the daily high, and Thursday should see a high of only 49. For Thursday’s date, Feb. 23, the historical average daily high is 63 degrees, according to the Modesto Irrigation District, which has recorded high and low temperatures since 1939.

If Thursday does reach a high of only 49, as the weather service predicts, it would be a record low for Modesto. MID weather archives show the minimum daily high on record for Feb. 23 was 51 degrees in 2010.

After Thursday, the highs will climb again, to near 51 Friday, 55 Saturday and 57 Sunday, according to the seven-day forecast.

Thursday also carries a 30% chance of showers, mainly before 4 a.m. and again after 10 a.m.

Though Friday will be partly sunny, the chance of showers lingers, the weather service says. Saturday and Sunday should be mostly sunny.

Over the course of the week, Modesto could get as much as half an inch of rain, the forecast says.

The current season rain total as of Monday was 13.13 inches, according to MID. That’s above the average season total of 12.12 inches and well over the season average to date, 8.21 inches. Rain season runs July 1 through June 30.

Most overnight lows are expected to be in the mid-30s this week, and widespread frost is predicted Saturday morning after 1 a.m.
