National Weather Service forecast calls for a wet close to the year in Modesto

After a dry couple of weeks, rain will return to Modesto, the National Weather Service forecasts. It’s predicted to begin falling Monday evening and could be with us, off and on, all week.

The first of the week’s two storm systems should arrive Monday and continue through Wednesday afternoon. It could drop between 1 and 2 inches of rain in the Modesto area. The weather service forecast also calls for south-southeast winds of up to 21 mph, with gusts of 30 mph or more.

The heaviest rain is expected after 11 p.m. Monday and before 2 p.m. Tuesday. Drivers should anticipate ponding water and roadway flooding, the weather service advises.

The timeline for the second storm is Wednesday night through Friday. Though the weather service says it overall won’t be as wet as the first storm, it again says Modesto could get up to 2 inches more. The winds of storm No. 1 are not expected to return with storm No. 2.

The chance of showers continues into Saturday.

Snow levels begin at 7,500 to 8,500 feet and drop to 4,500 to 5,500 Wednesday. The first storm could drop 24 to 30 inches on Sonora and Ebbetts passes, and the second could give them up to 2 feet more, the weather service says.
