Heat will build in Modesto this week. Just how high will temperatures get?

Temperatures in Modesto, Calif., will hit the upper 90s on Sunday, May 15, 2022, the National Weather Service said.
Temperatures in Modesto, Calif., will hit the upper 90s on Sunday, May 15, 2022, the National Weather Service said.

Modesto-area residents can expect highs to jump up about 30 degrees from Monday to the weekend, forecasters say.

The National Weather Service forecasts highs in the mid-90s in Modesto over the weekend as part of a warming trend.

Daytime highs on Monday were predicted to reach 64 degrees, with winds of about 10 mph. Winds are expected to continue through Wednesday night, when gusts may blow as high as 23 mph.

Forecasters say temperatures will rise throughout the week. Thursday temperatures will hit a high near 75, followed by a high of 85 Friday. Saturday temperatures may reach 94 degrees.

As for Sunday, a graphic released by the weather service shows a high of 96 degrees. but the online seven-day forecast for Modesto says the temperature could reach near 99.

The difference over the span of a few days is significant and more common in the spring and fall, said meteorologist Hannah Chandler-Cooley out of the NWS Sacramento office. Monday and Tuesday’s highs in the 60s are below normal for this time of year, she said.

“Once those weather systems move out, if we get pretty significant, high-pressure rich (systems), then that can raise the temperature above normal,” Chandler-Cooley said. “And that does typically happen more often, from well-below to well-above (normal), in these shoulder seasons.”

The weekend warming trend brings a moderate risk for heat-related illnesses for pets, livestock and people who are sensitive to heat, the NWS said. Area waterways are also expected to be cold and fast-moving.
