Sensitive groups should take precautions, including hydrating, dressing for h eat, limiting time outdoors and checking on children, the elderly and pets.

Average daily highs for this time of year are in the low 80s, the weather service said. But upcoming highs in Modesto are expected to be 90 degrees Thursday, 94 Friday and Saturday, and 91 Sunday.

Bearing in mind that people frequently beat the heat by heading to pools, rivers and reservoirs, the weather service also issued a reminder that waterways are running cold and fast. “Use caution to avoid hypothermia and keep an eye on children near the water,” it said.
