Impeachment backers, foes rally on busy Modesto street on eve of crucial vote
A couple hundred people turned out for dueling rallies in Modesto over the pending impeachment of President Donald Trump.
They took place late Tuesday afternoon at McHenry and Briggsmore avenues, one of the city’s busiest intersections.
“I believe in our democracy,” impeachment supporter Marilyn Michael of Modesto said. “I believe in our Constitution. We need to stand up and take our country back.”
The rallies happened as the U.S. House of Representatives prepared to vote on impeaching Trump over allegations that he pressured Ukraine’s president to investigate possible 2020 rival Joe Biden.
The pro-impeachment protesters were taking part in a national call to action Wednesday. They outnumbered the Trump supporters, who rallied at just one corner.
Oscar Luna of Modesto, one of the Trump backers, pointed out the strong economy and questioned whether the Ukraine charges had merit.
“The left is just making all kinds of stuff up,” he said.
