Alvarado-Gil heads for defeat in updated totals for Sacramento-area legislative races
State Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil appeared headed for defeat Tuesday, trailing two challengers in the 4th Senate District primary and on track to become the only Sacramento-area legislative incumbent to miss the November ballot.
Updated returns Tuesday afternoon showed Democrat Jaron Brandon and Republican Alexandra Duarte holding the top two spots — with 40.9% and 32.1%, respectively — in the district that stretches from Modesto through the Sierra. Election officials have until June 10 to certify the results.
Alvarado-Gil, R-Jackson, trailed with 27.1% of the vote, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. The Associated Press has projected that Brandon will advance, but has yet to call the race for a rival.
Alvarado-Gil was elected to the Senate as a Democrat in 2022 before switching to the Republican Party in 2024. Her first term also drew scrutiny after a former staff member accused her of sexual harassment, an allegation a Senate investigation later found was not substantiated.
Most other Sacramento-area incumbents cruised to strong leads in their legislative races. The latest results as of Tuesday evening:
Senate races
In the 6th Senate District, incumbent Sen. Roger Niello, R-Fair Oaks, held a comfortable lead with 56.3% of the vote. Democrats Sean Frame and Sara Velasco trailed with 28.5% and 15.2%, respectively. The 6th Senate District includes Roseville, Folsom and Galt.
Sacramento Democratic incumbent Sen. Angelique Ashby posted the strongest performance among Sacramento-area Senate candidates, earning 68% of the vote in the 8th Senate District. Republican Susan Mason received 27.4%, while Peace and Freedom Party candidate Linda Roberts garnered 4.6%.
Assembly races
In the 5th Assembly District, incumbent Joe Patterson, R-Lincoln, led Democrat Neva Parker 60.1% to 39.9%. The district includes Roseville and communities in the Placer foothills.
Sacramento Democratic incumbent Maggy Krell dominated the 6th Assembly District, receiving 85.9% of the vote to challenger Jagtar Singh’s 14.1%. The district covers Sacramento and Arden Arcade.
The 7th Assembly District produced one of the region’s tightest races. Incumbent Josh Hoover, R-Folsom, held 51% of the vote, narrowly ahead of Democrat Amy Slavensky at 47.1%. American Independent Party candidate Sanaz Motamedi received 2%. The 7th Assembly District includes Citrus Heights and Rancho Cordova.
In the 10th Assembly District, incumbent Stephanie Nguyen, D-Elk Grove, secured 71.5% of the vote, defeating Republican challenger Vinaya Singh, who received 28.5%. The district encompasses Elk Grove and portions of Sacramento.
Similar to congressional races, but unlike county-level elections, the top two vote-getters will advance to the November election regardless of whether either candidate wins a majority of the vote.
