California’s primary election results show low registered voter turnout in Stanislaus County
During the March 5 primary election, Stanislaus County voter turnout lagged behind the statewide rate.
As of Tuesday night’s tallies, a little over 43,437 voters, or 15% of the nearly 285,977 registered voters in the county, had returned their ballots in this primary election. In the 2020 primary election, the county saw a 43% turnout.
About 4 million voters in California participated in Tuesday’s election, representing 18% of the state’s 22 million registered voters compared to 47% in the March 2020 primary, according to unofficial election results from the California Secretary of State’s Office.
In California, from 2000 to 2020, the Latino vote nearly tripled, soaring from 1.6 million to 4.5 million, marking a 184% increase. The number of Latinos eligible to vote also steadily expanded during that period, reaching 8.3 million in 2020.
In Stanislaus County, Latinos make up 37% of registered voters, but only 8% of those voters returned their ballots for Tuesday’s primary. The county’s Latino turnout rates were lower than the statewide numbers where Latinos make up 28% of registered voters, but only 12% returned their ballots.
California is still in the process of counting ballots, and the initial results from each county may reflect their individual methods of ballot processing.
Mail-in ballots are still being counted in California.
