Based on the early results from Tuesday’s primary, the front-runners to represent the Modesto area in the Legislature and U.S. House of Representatives have emerged.

The top two vote-getters in each race will advance to the Nov. 8 election.

In the race for Assembly District 22 — which includes parts of Stanislaus and Merced counties — Stanislaus County sheriff’s Sgt. Juan Alanis, a Republican, leads with 32.1% of the vote. Democrat Jessica Self is in second place with 28.1% of the vote. Self is an attorney in the Stanislaus County Public Defender’s Office.

Ceres Democrat and public relations consultant Chad Condit is in third place with 24.7% of the vote. Republican Joel Campos is in fourth place with 11.4%.

Republican Assemblyman Heath Flora ran unopposed in District 9, which includes parts of San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties.

In the race for state Senate District 4, Democrat Tim Robertson is the leading vote-getter among eight candidates, with 23.4% of the vote. Robertson is executive director of the Modesto-based North Valley Labor Federation. Democrat Marie Alvarado-Gil of Amador County was in second place with 20.1% of the vote.

Republican George Radanovich, a former Mariposa congressman who served 16 years in the U.S. House, was in third place with 17% of the vote.

The state Senate district includes all of Stanislaus County and parts of 12 other counties east of here, ranging from Lake Tahoe to Death Valley.

In the race for California’s Fifth Congressional District, Republican U.S. Rep. Tom McClintock was the top vote-getter with 43.7%. McClintock currently serves in the U.S. House of Representatives but in a seat that is disappearing after congressional districts were redrawn to reflect the 2020 Census.

Democrat Mike Barkley of Manteca was in second place with 36.6% of the vote. He was the only Democrat among the six candidates. This is his fifth campaign for Congress. Republican Nathan Magsig, a former Fresno County supervisor and former Clovis mayor, was in third place with 11.7% of the vote.

The Fifth Congressional District encompasses eight counties but Stanislaus County is at its heart. It includes most of Modesto and Turlock.

In California’s 13th Congressional District, Assemblyman Adam Gray, D-Merced, was in the lead with 33.2% of the vote. Republican John Duarte, the owner of a prominent Hughson tree nursery, was second with 30.8%. Democrat Phil Arballo was third with 19.1% of the vote.

The congressional district is centered in Merced County and the western third of Stanislaus County but runs through parts of Fresno, Madera and San Joaquin counties.

There still are thousands of votes left to count in these and other races in Tuesday’s primary.

For instance, voter turnout was at 11.8% as of late Tuesday when the Stanislaus County Election’s Office released its early results. The final voter turnout was 38% in the 2018 primary, 44.5% in the 2016 primary.

Stanislaus County Registrar of Voters Donna Linder expects her office will release its next update on the primary results Thursday.
