Dog experiences kindness for first time at PA shelter as he heals from suffering
A rescued dog’s condition was so horrible that it left one Philadelphia shelter “shaken.”
While now on the road to recovery, Hector wasn’t so lucky before he was brought into the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the shelter said.
“Last week, two stray dogs were found in the backyard of a North Philadelphia property. While both needed help and were brought to our headquarters, one’s condition left us shaken,” the shelter said in an April 4 Facebook post. “We’d like to introduce you to Hector.”
Photos depict a heartbreaking sight, with Hector’s rib cage protruding through his weakened body as red blotches line his ivory and brown coat.
“His sad eyes tell a story no living being should ever have to experience. He is so emaciated that his bones have begun pushing through his skin, creating a gaping wound on his hip. His lopsided face and every visible rib speak of suffering that’s difficult to fathom,” the shelter said.
“As our medical team works to flush his wounds, create a careful refeeding plan, and give him the gentlest care possible, we can’t help but wonder about the journey that brought him to us - and how he reached this point.”
Mystery surrounds the weakened pup, the shelter notes, while neglect and undernourishment hang on the tips of everyone’s tongues.
“What did Hector experience before he found himself in our care?” the shelter asked.
“The road to recovery will be long and challenging, but today, Hector is experiencing something he hasn’t known in a long time - kindness.”
Since Hector is still in the process of healing, he’s not available for adoption just yet.
