A cat named after the brilliant Polish chemist Marie Curie is looking for her forever family in Texas.

Curie, the actual person, was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize for her discovery of polonium and radium, the first person to ever win two Nobel Prizes and the only person to ever win in two separate scientific fields.

So when a sweet cat was found by someone over the summer in Lubbock, the South Plains SPCA saw the perfect opportunity to name her after one of the most famous women pioneers in science.

“From the discovery of radium to being your new best friend, the beautiful Marie Curie is ready to discover the love of her own family!” the shelter said in a Nov. 13 Facebook post, hinting at why they named her after someone so special.

“This incredible tortie tabby mama raised her Little Geniuses (who are also available for adoption) and is seeking early retirement in a forever home of her own where she can be the queen she knows she is!”

Regardless of her hard start in the brutal Texas heat, Marie appears to be thriving in her foster home.

“Marie was found this summer by a good citizen right after she had given birth and soon arrived in her foster home,” the shelter said.

“Marie has been safe, dry, fed and loved ever since. She is a petite, affectionate girl who wants all of your attention to herself! She doesn’t mind being picked up and carried around, and she loves sleeping with her humans at night, as long as there are no other cats too close by.”

Unlike the original Madame Curie, this kitty would prefer to be the one and only in her household. Marie shared the spotlight with her husband, physicist Pierre Curie, who shared her first Nobel prize with her.

The young cat also doesn’t mind being alone in the house and loves treats and drinking out of a cat fountain.

“She even has her very own water fountain to take with her to her forever home that was gifted by a kind donor,” the shelter said. “Marie is grateful to be indoors and plans to continue to enjoy the finer things of house cat life for many, many years to come.”
