A cat who has lived a lifetime of despair and misery is showing that he’s still capable of love and affection.

The Humane Society for Hamilton County in Fishers, Indiana, is hoping that someone will see the loving heart of Dr. Waffles and welcome him into their home, the shelter said.

“Today is Dr. Waffles 1 year anniversary in the shelter and for over 10 years, Dr. Waffles has known nothing but heartache,” the shelter said in a Sept. 15 Facebook post.

“After spending most of his life as an outdoor cat, he finally found himself indoors, only to be tormented by a large dog and three other cats. He didn’t stand a chance. By the time he was surrendered to HSHC in September 2023, Dr. Waffles was physically ill and emotionally shattered — his spirit worn down by the constant stress of his past life.”

According to his profile, Dr. Waffles — a domestic shorthair cat — lived for two years with a German shepherd and other cats and was “an unhappy camper” while in the situation, which brought on heavy stress. When he was surrendered to the shelter, he was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection.

“He spent weeks alone wondering if anyone would ever come to love him,” the post continued. “He didn’t even have the energy to get out of bed when someone came to visit. Instead, he just lay there, tired and defeated. But the moment a gentle hand reached out to pet him, something flickered inside him.”

Dr. Waffles has since been living with a foster family that has embraced him into a loving and warm environment, the post says. They even refer to him as a “bedtime cuddle kitty.”

“But the heartbreaking truth is, Dr. Waffles is still waiting — waiting for a home of his own. He’s spent a year in limbo, longing for the love he’s been searching for his entire life,” the post says.
