Two teens accused of breaking into six schools — rappelling into one, Utah police say
Two men accused of breaking into six Utah schools and damaging and stealing property have been charged, officials said.
Reise Jones, 19 and Jacob Trapp, 18, face more than a dozen charges each, including burglary, theft, criminal mischief, unlawful manufacture or possession of burglary tools, and failure to stop at the command of a law officer.
From April to July, the two broke into five elementary schools and one middle school in the Canyons School District, police said in a probable cause statement.
Trapp and Jones told police they rappelled into one school to enter it, the statement says.
Officers said they later found rappelling gear in Trapp’s car.
They stole laptops, a 3D printer, candy, keychains, balls, a megaphone and stuffed pink unicorn chairs, according to police. And they cost the schools thousands of dollars in damage.
Surveillance cameras at Park Lane Elementary caught the two in the school, police said. They are accused of damaging the skylight, which cost $1,580.43 to repair, authorities said in the probable cause statement.
Trapp also faces an arson charge because he is accused of lighting a “small explosive” on a hallway floor at Sunrise Elementary School, police said.
An officer said he saw the men wearing black running with the pink stuffed animals to Sunrise Elementary School on July 26.
“It was really disappointing to us that there was a string of burglaries in our schools,” Canyons School District spokesperson Jeff Haney told KUTV. “When you steal from a school, you just don’t steal items. You steal a child’s education.”
