Swimmers try to save man who fell 200 feet off a San Francisco cliff, rescuers say
Rescue efforts weren’t enough to save a man who fell from a cliff in San Francisco on Wednesday afternoon, according to local officials.
The man was spotted on rocks below a Lands End cliff in the afternoon after he plummeted roughly 200 feet toward the water, the San Francisco Fire Department said in an update on Twitter.
“Rescue swimmers are attempting to reach victim who is on rocks in the surf,” the Fire Department said while responding to the area, asking visitors to avoid the active scene.
But after the man was reached, rescuers pronounced him dead, fire officials said.
Lands End is a tourist attraction that features hiking trails among rocky cliffs that overlook the Pacific Ocean on the western edge of the Bay Area city. It’s part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The cliff the man fell from was near the Legion of Honor museum, according to KGO, which sent a helicopter over the scene.
The TV station reported that “crews on a boat, jet skis and swimmers tried to reach him. Minutes after responding, rescue crews recovered a body.”
Fire officials said U.S. Park Police are investigating the man’s death.
The rescue effort started around 2:50 p.m., according to the Fire Department.
