Bee in Turlock: Farmers market on the move; shop makes hay out of Deflategate

The Turlock Certified Farmers Market is on the move.

When the weekly event resumes in the spring, it will remain at the same spot – Broadway and Main Street – it has occupied since it started in 2010. But instead of Friday mornings, the market will be held Saturdays.

Many attendees have requested a Saturday morning market since it opened; the issue is among the frequently asked questions on the market’s website. But earlier attempts to open a farmers market on Saturdays stalled.

Turlock has a turbulent history with farmers markets. Several years ago, a Thursday evening event grew so popular it was unwieldy, and the crowds it attracted weren’t buying a lot of produce.

With a few years under its belt, however, the market is ready for the move. Look for the new Saturday morning market to open May 2.

Unless you really, really don’t care about football, you no doubt have heard about Deflategate. That’s the brouhaha over footballs used by the New England Patriots in their championship game with the Indianapolis Colts in which the balls were underinflated.

Well, Turlock’s Olde Tyme Pastries is making hay – or, rather, baked goods – out of that situation.

According to the bakery’s Monica Silva, Old Tyme has created deflated football cakes and cookies to go along with the usual Super Bowl-themed fare its bakers create this time of year.

It’s not clear whether the “deflated” goodies taste any better than their full-size counterparts, but it’s a sure bet they taste better than actual footballs. No matter how they’re inflated.
