Man arrested in Turlock attempted homicide
Turlock Police on Tuesday arrested a man suspected in a drive-by shooting last week.
Gabriel Martinez, 26, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, participating in a criminal street gang and several weapons charges for the March 30 shooting of a 25-year-old man on Almond Avenue.
The victim was shot multiple times while sitting in his car. He was treated for serious injuries and has since been released from the hospital.
Sgt. Stephen Webb said detectives located the car used in the shooting, and it contained ammunition. Through the investigation, detectives learned Martinez had been in the car. They issued a local warrant for his arrest for being a felon in possession of ammunition, Webb said.
An undercover officer spotted Martinez driving on West Main Street at about 4:45 p.m. He radioed for a patrol officer, who pulled Martinez over for having tinted windows.
Martinez ran from the car while it was still moving and it rolled into a nearby home, Webb said. Officers caught up with Martinez and arrested him.
There was no structural damage to the home.
Martinez’s passenger, 22-year-old Freddy Gill, stayed in the car and surrendered. He was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm. A gun was found tucked between the center console and his seat.
