Bee in Turlock: Help, traffic and hope for quitters

Winter has settled in and the We Care shelter has gotten busy.

The Turlock shelter, which houses homeless men during the winter, put out a wish list of what it needs. The list includes towels, toiletries, blankets, cold and flu medicine, and bike racks. Money, of course, also is welcome. It costs $20 to house one man for one night.

Donations may be sent to We Care, P.O. Box 1291, Turlock 95381. For more information, email info@wecare.org or call (209) 664-2003.

If you’re headed to Washington Road between West Main Street and Fulkerth Road on Thursday, don’t. The road will be closed to all traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the city’s Public Works Department.

Detours will be in place.

Next week, the center will have two free seminars about smoking and lung cancer. One of the messages to be delivered is that even if you have tried before and failed to quit, giving it another shot is worthwhile.

“What’s really important for people to know is that it is possible to quit,” medical oncologist Mohamed Eldaly said in a news release. “It may take three or four tries, or even six or seven, but the payoff for the smoker and their family is huge.”

An evening seminar will be held Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The seminar will be repeated the next morning, Wednesday, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

“Even if you’ve tried to quit in the past, but still smoke, it’s worth quitting again,” Eldaly said. “It is hard to do, but millions of people have been successful, and you can, too.”

The seminars will be held at Emanuel Cancer Center, 880 E. Tuolumne Road. The seminars are free, but preregistration is required. Phone (209) 250-5355 to register.
