A dairy pond levee broke early Friday along the 4200 block of West Linwood Avenue, flooding surrounding streets, the Police Department reported Friday afternoon.

Officers responded to the report of the break shortly before 6 a.m., notified residents and provided sand bags to prevent damage to the interiors of residences from the potentially soiled water.

West Linwood between Tegner Road and Washington Road has been closed for an undetermined amount of time, police said. The department is asking drivers to stay away from the area and use alternate routes during efforts to remove the water.

“We do not yet have an estimate for when the road will be open, as that determination will be made by the Department of Environmental Resources, which also responded to the incident,” Police Department spokeswoman Officer Mayra Lewis said in Friday afternoon’s news release.

Additional sand bags are available for pickup at the Water Quality Control office at 901 S. Walnut Road.
