Turlock plastics recycling company to get $1 million grant

Peninsula Plastics Recycling Inc. has one of eight projects that the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) will support with its newly established greenhouse gas reduction grants.

The Turlock company will receive a $1 million grant for equipment that will allow it to recover about 45 percent of the byproduct from its recycling process and turn it into landscaping material. The project is expected to create about nine jobs, CalRecycle said in a news release Wednesday.

Peninsula Plastics is a 180,000-square-foot recycling plant on Tegner Road that specializes in the baling, sorting, grinding, washing, pelletizing and “solid stating” of recyclable plastic bottles from the California Redemption Value (CRV) system.

According to the company’s website, “We specialize in processing redemption, curbside and industrial scrap plastics into clean, ready-to-use recycled plastic in the form of pellets or flakes. These recycled products can be used in a number of applications including FDA grade for beverage bottles; bottles for home cleaning products, shampoo, hand soap; sheet for thermoformed trays and clamshells; fiber for polyester carpet; fabric for T-shirts, upholstery and sweaters; fiberfill for sleeping bags; strapping; and many other consumer products.”

For the eight projects being awarded grants, CalRecycle says $19.5 million has been earmarked for construction of facilities, expansion of existing facilities and equipment upgrades to process greater amounts of recycled materials. The grants, using proceeds from the state’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, are awarded based primarily on contributions to the state’s greenhouse gas reduction targets. The projects are also important in California’s effort to reach its statewide goal of 75 percent recycling, composting and source reduction by 2020.
