Three children in a stroller and their baby sitter were struck by a car traveling through a crosswalk in west Turlock on Tuesday evening.

The young children – their ages not available Tuesday – were crossing West Main Street with their sitter, a woman in her 20s, when they were struck by the car that was traveling west shortly before 6 p.m., said Turlock police Lt. Ron Reid.

A mangled stroller lay on its side in the crosswalk and debris was strewn across the intersection, but Reid said, “It looks worse than it is.”

The sitter suffered a head injury and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. However, only one of the children, all of whom were in the stroller, was injured. A boy suffered a minor injury to his mouth.

The people in the car that hit them, an elderly couple, were followed by a witness until police arrived and pulled them over near the scene of the crash at West Main Street and West Avenue, according to Reid. He said officers are investigating why the driver didn’t stop.

Firefighters held the children and wrapped them in blankets from their stroller while officers investigated the incident.

Westbound lanes of West Main were closed during that time.
