A Turlock restaurateur who closed one of his restaurants in April will close another in May. At the same time, a man who used to work for him has closed his own bar.

Jerry Powell — owner of Cuts Steakhouse, Katana Sushi Bar and The Udder Place in Turlock — shut the doors of his Ripon business, Ripon Social, on Easter Sunday. It was announced a couple of days later that Cuts Steakhouse will serve its last customers May 2.

“We are deeply grateful that we’ve been able to serve our Turlock community for the past few years, and this decision wasn’t made lightly,” an Instagram post reads. “Please join us through our final days to get your favorite Cuts cocktails and food and have some last celebrations with our team.”

The restaurant, at 142 W. Main St. in Turlock, will operate from 5 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays until closing day. The bar will be open from 4 to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Outstanding giftcards from Ripon Social can be used at Cuts Steakhouse until May 2, and any that have not been redeemed from either Ripon Social or Cuts Steakhouse can be used at Katana Sushi Bar.

Ceres bar closes with promise of new life

When Powell and partner Shayne Heine opened upscale bar The Grand Cru in Turlock in 2017, Nelson Ramirez was hired as general manager. Ramirez also helped get The Udder Place up and running when Powell and Heine opened it in 2015.

In 2018, Ramirez opened his own bar — The Rusty Nail at 3014 Fourth St. in Ceres. Then in 2022, Ramirez bought Coach’s Corner in east Modesto and renamed it The Standard Pub.

“The Rusty Nail brought night life back to Ceres, CA,” an Instagram post reads. “Through the years, it changed to the liking of the people that gave it life.”

But now, The Rusty Nail is no longer. The post says new owners will be “revamping the space” and The Standard Pub, at 950 Oakdale Road in Modesto, will remain open.
