Turlock man sentenced to state prison for knocking out elderly veteran who was taking a walk

In the courts: Gavel silhouette

A 36-year-old Turlock resident has been sentenced to nine years in state prison for an assault last spring on an elderly man — apparently because he was a veteran.

According to District Attorney Jeff Laugero, Anthony Mark Castillo was convicted of elder abuse causing great bodily injury against a 77-year-old man who was out on a walk in Turlock.

On June 1, the victim was approached by Castillo, who asked if he had served in the military. The man responded that he had, and Castillo punched him in the face. The victim collapsed and lost consciousness. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of cuts and bruises to his face and arms.

Investigators said that the attack was unprovoked.

The case was investigated by the Turlock Police Department and prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Sameer Shukla.
