Family members and Modesto driver killed in Turlock crash ID’d by Stanislaus County coroner
The four people killed in a Turlock collision on Sunday morning were identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.
Daniel Lourenco, 44, Jennifer Lourenco, 45 and Uriel Guizar-Negrete, 22, were declared dead at the scene of the collision. The Lourencos’ 16-year-old daughter, Madelynn, died later at a hospital.
Two others from the Lourenco family, a 19-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son, were “fighting for their lives,” the California Highway Patrol said on Sunday. The pair remained hospitalized Monday afternoon, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Thomas Olsen.
Pitman High School posted Monday morning on Facebook that the Lourencos are a Pitman family. It was not immediately clear whether all three teens had attended the school. “Pitman will have counselors and chaplains to support students, faculty and staff throughout the week,” the post reads in part. “Please keep this family in your hearts and prayers.”
Jennifer Lourenco was a teacher at Sinclear Elementary in the Ceres Unified School District.
“While we are still processing this unimaginable tragedy, our hearts go out to members of the Lourenco family and their loved ones,” Ceres Unified spokeswoman Beth Parker Jimenez told The Bee in an email. “Mrs. Lourenco was a moderate-severe teacher at Sinclear Elementary School and was Sinclear’s Teacher of the Year in 2023-24. She was a gifted and dedicated educator and a beloved colleague whose loss will be deeply felt throughout the school community. The district has counseling services available at Sinclear and all other CUSD schools for any students and staff who need support.”
Daniel Lorenco had been a Turlock Irrigation District employee from 2015 until 2022 and finished his time there as a water and energy management systems manager, TID spokesperson Constance Anderson told The Bee. “Though Dan moved on from TID, he left an incredible impact on the systems and people he worked with,” she said in an email. “His colleagues will tell you that TID employs the cutting edge data center it does because of Dan’s tireless hard work. Those who worked closely with Dan describe him as a humble and soft-spoken leader who took great pride in his role at TID. Our hearts go out to the many friends, co-workers and family members affected by this tragedy.”
The email included this comment from TID General Manager Brad Koehn: “You would be hard-pressed to find a single person that would have a negative thing to say about Dan. He was just that great a person.”
The Bee had no information Monday about Guizar-Negrete.
The circumstances of the collision
The Lourencos’ 2023 Jeep was broadsided by Guizar-Negrete’s 2008 Infiniti at about 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Lander and Greenway avenues, the CHP reported.
There are stop signs for drivers on Greenway but not Lander, which has a 55 mph speed limit in that area. The circumstances of the crash are under investigation. Morning fog had lifted and the conditions were clear, according to CHP.
A news release from the CHP later Sunday reads in part, “The driver of the Jeep entered the intersection directly in front of the Infiniti. The front of the Infiniti struck the left side of the Jeep.” The release also says the Infiniti driver was traveling at “a high rate of speed.”
All occupants of the Jeep were wearing their seat belts, but Guizar-Negrete was not, a CHP sergeant said. It has not yet been determined if alcohol or drugs factored into the collision, he said.
