Super Bowl LVII is Sunday, so some Stanislaus County area law enforcement agencies plan to have extra officers on the roads to keep an eye out for impaired drivers.

The Modesto California Highway Patrol Office will send out additional deputies to specifically look for drivers under the influence on the night of Feb. 12, CHP Officer Thomas Olsen said.

“Like the opposing coaches, the California Highway Patrol asks fans to come up with a game plan for the big game. If your festivities include alcohol, now is the time to plan ahead,” Olsen wrote in a message to The Bee. “Remember, DUI is a choice.”

The CHP recommends designating a sober driver or using ridesharing options.

The Turlock Police Department shared a similar message in a press release. It asks that residents stick to the “Go Safely” Game Plan from the California Office of Traffic Safety and CalTrans. The campaign emphasizes the need for fans to get to a bar, restaurant, or a friend’s house without rushing.

Go Safely California offers football fans three things to remember if they want to drink and get around on game day:

  1. Plan ahead: Designate a sober driver and make sure they’re with you before you start drinking.
  2. Share a ride: Take public transportation or use a ride-hailing service.
  3. Keep your friends safe: Don’t let them drive drunk.

“The Turlock Police Department reminds the public that alcohol is not the only substance that impairs,” according to the press release. “Marijuana, prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may also impair your ability to drive safely. Do your research and understand how certain drugs may affect you.”
