Update: Woman dies after being struck by pickup truck in downtown Turlock

Pedestrian fatality

A female pedestrian died Wednesday evening in downtown Turlock after she was struck by a pickup truck, police said.

First responders were called around 5 p.m. to the collision at Ninth Street and Lander Avenue, according to a Turlock Police Department release. They found a 66-year-old woman, Martha Barajas, who had been struck by a dark GMC Sierra.

An off-duty nurse began performing CPR on Barajas quickly after the collision. Firefighters took over lifesaving efforts once they arrived on scene, but the pedestrian died after being transported to the hospital.

Initial evidence shows Barajas was walking east in a crosswalk on Lander Avenue when she was struck, police said. The driver, a 43-year-old man, was driving north on Lander.

Police said the driver stayed on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision.

The pickup truck was towed as part of standard protocol for processing evidence, and investigators closed the road for about three hours to search the scene and collect statements and video evidence.

Anyone with information should call Officer Martin Marquez at 209-668-5550, ext. 6761. They can also contact the Turlock Police Department’s Tip Line at 209-668-5550, ext. 6780, or email at tpdtipline@turlock.ca.us.
