Veterans Day marked with ceremony in Turlock. How you can still attend Modesto’s
The city of Turlock hosted its annual Veterans Day ceremony Thursday, moved to a new location in consideration of the coronavirus pandemic.
The ceremony, typically held at the small Central Park in downtown Turlock, was relocated to the Turlock Regional Sports Complex to provide more room for people to spread out.
“Veterans Day always allows us to remember the special bond between our community and each and every man and woman who served to defend our American freedom,” Mayor Amy Bublak said in a news release. “They give so much in their service, it’s proper that we honor them.”
Veterans Day, once known as Armistice Day, originally was set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place Nov. 11, 1918. On June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.
The city of Modesto moved its Veterans Day event to Saturday this year.
The parade, with a theme commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, is set to step off at 9 a.m. at 10th and O Streets. It will head east down Needham Street, ending at Graceada Park. The park will be set up with vendors.
