Inmate who died in Stanislaus County jail identified as Turlock man

An inmate who died in his cell at the Stanislaus County jail last week was identified as Daniel Chavez, of Turlock.

The 24-year-old had been in custody since his Oct. 16 arrest by Turlock Police on Oct. 16 on charges of assault likely to produce great bodily injury, disobeying a court order and vandalism.

Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Josh Clatyon said his Chavez’s cell mate found him unresponsive in the early morning hours of Jan. 9. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Clayton said there was no sign of any trauma on Chavez’s body and his death is not believed to be suspicious. His cause of death is pending toxicology results.

According to a Go Fund Me page established by Chavez’s sister, he was married and had a 4-year-old daughter.
