Triple-digit temps gone for next few days
The worst should be behind us for the next couple of days, at least.
After a recorded high temperature of 102 degrees in Modesto on Monday, according to the Modesto Irrigation District, the forecast for today is increasing cloudiness with a high near 96.
Tonight will bring a 20 percent chance of precipitation, in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall would be less than a tenth of an inch, and the low will be around 67, according to the National Weather Service.
Wednesday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 90. Thursday, the temperature is expected to climb again, to a high near 95.
Friday and Saturday, the thermometer will be flirting with triple digits again. Then, Sunday, the expected high will be back down to near 93.
Monday’s heat created a few power failures for the Turlock Irrigation District. It’s not unusual for the first very hot day of the season, said TID spokesman Calvin Curtin, because people tend to crank up the air conditioning.
Two transformers in Ceres failed, and both were underground, which makes them harder to pinpoint and more difficult to fix, Curtin said. One failure was at Hardy Court and Central Avenue and lasted from about 3 to 11 p.m. The second was a Crownview Drive and Aarvig Lane and lasted from about 1:30 to 8 p.m.
Each outage affected about 20 customers, Curtin said. A guy wire also was struck about 3:45 p.m., causing an outage in Turlock, but that was quickly restored.
“Overall, we did pretty well yesterday considering it was the first hot day,” Curtin said.
