Police called to an assault of a cab driver arrested the suspect after they spotted him peeking over a fence, authorities said.

According to Turlock Police spokeswoman Mayra Lewis, officers were called to the 800 block of Angelus Street at 10:33 p.m. The victim, a 38-year-old man, told officers that he had been called to the area to pick up a fare.

After the driver picked up the woman, her boyfriend thought the cabbie was “hitting on” her, Lewis said.

The suspect, later identified as Jon Scott, 18, attacked the victim, punching him several times. The cab driver suffered minor injuries.

“The victim was able to run away, and as he did, the suspect took several items of property form inside the cab,” she said.

Officers arrived and started talking to the victim, who then pointed out the woman who was his original fare. As police talked to her, Lewis said, they noticed someone peeking over a nearby fence. The victim identified the man behind the fence as his attacker; Scott was taken into custody.

He was arrested on a charge of robbery; as of Friday afternoon, he remained at Stanislaus County Jail with bail set at $50,000.
