Denair boy hit while biking has major injury, CHP says

The student struck by a vehicle Thursday morning while riding to school on a bicycle is an 11-year-old Denair boy, who suffered a major leg injury and was airlifted to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for treatment, the California Highway Patrol reported Friday.

The boy, who was not wearing a helmet, was riding his bike westbound on Monte Vista Avenue through the intersection at Lester Road at about 7:50 a.m. There are stop signs for Monte Vista drivers and cyclists; traffic on Lester does not stop.

Hickman resident Kurt Warner, 62, was driving south on Lester in a 2012 Toyota Tundra. He struck the bike as it was crossing the intersection, and the boy was thrown, hitting the roadway, according to the CHP report.

Warner was not injured, and distracted driving and alcohol are not thought to be factors in the crash, the CHP said.

The medical center did not have information on the child’s condition Friday morning, as he still was being evaluated by doctors.
