Bee in Turlock: Farmers market moving again, Assyrian New Year, and how hip are we?
Even before it starts its season, the Turlock Certified Farmers Market is moving again.
Market officials earlier this year announced that the event would be held Saturday mornings rather than Fridays. This week, they announced that it also will be in a slightly different location.
The market will be on Main Street, between Center and Palm streets, in downtown Turlock. In previous years, it was held on Broadway near Main Street.
The season gets underway May 2.
The Turlock Assyrian American Civic Club will host an Assyrian New Year dinner and dance to celebrate the start of year 6765 for the ancient culture.
Festivities begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at the club, 2618 N. Golden State Blvd. The cost is $40 for members, $50 for nonmembers and $20 for children. Tickets can be bought from 6 to 9 p.m. at the club, during its restaurant hours.
Organizers say the dance portion of the night may be canceled if the situation worsens for Assyrians under threat by Islamic State militants in Syria.
Turns out, folks in Turlock are relatively hip.
According to a study released by FindTheHome this week, the most “hipster” place in Stanislaus County is somewhere around Vernalis, because a high percentage of 20-somethings live there.
But the true hipster capital of the county is north Turlock, which has the cafes, yoga studios and college degrees typical of the utterly hip.
How is the Hipster Score calculated? It’s a combination of a few factors: a majority of highly educated (bachelor’s degree or higher) residents, a high percentage of residents between the ages of 20 and 34, and a large number of cafes and yoga studios.
Of course, hipness is relative. Overall, Stanislaus County spurns the hipster image. The county scored 28, while California as a whole earned a 49.
