If worse comes to worst – though there’s no indication it will – a couple of struggling retailers could shutter about a dozen stores in the Northern San Joaquin Valley over the next two years.

On Sunday, Gymboree announced that it signed a restructuring agreement with the majority of its lenders to reduce the corporation’s debt by more than $900 million. To facilitate the financial restructuring and recapitalization, Gymboree filed for Chapter 11 protection with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

In a statement, the corporation said it expects to operate “the majority” of its 1,281 stores during the restructuring. Those include Gymboree stores (532 in the United States), Gymboree outlets (171 in the U.S.), Janie and Jack shops (148) and Crazy 8 (378) stores.

The company told the Los Angeles Times the exact timing and final list of closures was still being determined. According to court documents, the San Francisco company could close up to 450 locations, the Times reported.

“We expect to move through this process quickly and emerge as a stronger organization that is better positioned in today’s evolving retail landscape, with the right size store footprint and greater financial flexibility to invest in Gymboree’s long-term growth,” Daniel Griesemer, president and CEO of Gymboree, said in a statement.

Locally, Vintage Faire Mall has a Gymboree and a Crazy 8. Mall representatives said they could not comment since Gymboree has not announced specific closures.

Also this week, Ascena Retail Group Inc., which operates Ann Taylor, Lane Bryant, Loft, Maurices, Dress Barn, Catherines and the Justice kids fashion chain, said it plans to close up to 667 stores over the next two years, according to the Times. It has a total of 4,850 stores. Again, it did not disclose which locations would close.

The nearest Ann Taylor store is in Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton, and the nearest Lofts in Pleasanton and Stockton. But Ascena operates its other stores from southern San Joaquin County to Merced County.

There are Lane Bryants in the Vintage Plaza shopping center at 3250 Dale Road in Modesto and the Merced Mall.

Justice stores are found in the Crossroads at Riverbank center, 2417 Claribel Road; Monte Vista Crossings, 2727 Countryside Drive, Turlock; and Stadium Center, 2238 Daniels St., Manteca.

Stadium Center and Monte Vista Crossings also have Dress Barns, as do Marshalls Plaza, 3440 McHenry Ave., Modesto, and the Applegate Ranch shopping center, 1100 Commerce Ave., Atwater.

Maurices has locations at Stadium Center and Monte Vista Crossings, and there’s a Catherines at 3801 Pelandale Ave., Modesto.
