Turlock High team hosts Navy JROTC from 12 high schools
A Navy Junior ROTC competition drew teams from a dozen schools to Turlock High School to take part in sports, air rifle, academic and other contests.
The 4th annual Turlock High School Bulldog Challenge on Saturday pitted about 700 students from 13 Central Valley schools from Dinuba to Stockton, said Turlock High Navy JROTC leader Carlos Montenez, a retired Navy lieutenant commander.
The day included traditional sports such as basketball, softball, vollyball and a 1-mile relay race. It also had events rarely seen at schools today, such as a tug-of-war and dodgeball.
Other events included a SEAL challenge and field, an air rifle shooting competition and a cardboard boat race. Ten of the schools competed in a Brain Brawl academic competition.
Turlock’s NJROTC brought home the first place trophy in academics, and the bulldog air rifle team remains undefeated in competitions for the 2016-2017 season.
Weston Ranch High Army JROTC took home the overall competition first place trophy.
