No people or animals were injured, but a few cats escaped when a car crashed into a shelter in Oakdale.

Firefighters responded just before 2 p.m. Sunday to the ASTRO Foundation at Highway 108-120 and Stearns Road. It helps with animal services in the cities of Oakdale and Riverbank.

The car went through an outside window into the pet adoption area, the Modesto Fire Department said in its daily incident report.

The shelter will not have public access “until further notice,” the foundation said in a Facebook post. The staff remains available by email, info@astrofoundation.org, for people who would like to arrange adoptions.

“A small handful of the cats in this space escaped during the incident,” the post added. People who spot them also can send an email.

“We appreciate your patience, flexibility and support as we navigate this situation” the post reads. “... Thank you for your understanding and continued kindness.”

ASTRO stands for Animal Shelter to Riverbank & Oakdale. The nonprofit formed when the two cities had just a cramped space on Liberini Avenue, just north of the Stanislaus River.

The crash happened at the former Oakdale Veterinary Group Building, which ASTRO had purchased to expand its operations. They include spaying and neutering of dogs and cats and a “pet food pantry” for families who cannot afford it. ASTRO also raises money at a thrift shop on East E Street in downtown Oakdale.

Oakdale and Riverbank are not part of Stanislaus Animal Services, which includes five cities and unincorporated areas.
