Dare to Dream Conference for students, parents in Modesto

Students and their parents are invited to attend a free workshop Thursday evening at Modesto High School, where they can learn about scholarships, college loans and federal programs designed to protect undocumented immigrants avoid deportation.

The Dare to Dream Conference is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the high school’s cafeteria at 18 H Street in west Modesto. Attendees at the event, which is open to all students and parents, can receive information about the federal programs and other immigration issues.

Under these federal programs, millions of immigrants already living in the U.S. will be protected and allowed to apply for work permits - provided they are parents, pass a background check and pay fees - and hundreds of thousands who were brought to the country illegally as children.

There also will be information about college scholarships and loans for undocumented students, and information about the state’s new law offering undocumented immigrants a chance to get a driver’s license. Prospective college students can also learn about available local internships.

More than 15 local community agencies will be available at the event. For more information, call organizer Damaris Esquivel at (209) 303-2420.
