Young Escalon scientists capture imagination, awards

Dent Elementary School in Escalon and several Lammersville Unified schools brought home an armload of trophies from the 58th annual San Joaquin County Science and Engineering Fair in Stockton.

The San Joaquin County Office of Education announced results Thursday from 300 individual, group and whole-class projects submitted by more than 600 K-12 students in the county. The fair included project viewing and a presentation by the “Paper Airplane Guy.”

Forty volunteer judges performed evaluations of projects and student interviews. Several winners will represent San Joaquin County in the California State Science Fair in Los Angeles in May.

KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SECOND GRADE. Class winner: Emily Hoptry’s class, “Pop Goes the Kernel,” Bethany Elementary, Lammersville Unified School District; first place (tie): Cade Riesenbeck, “Hot Marshmallows,” and Theodore Harp, “There is More Than One Way to Crack a Nut,” both of Dent Elementary, Escalon Unified; second place: Wyatt Riesenbeck, “Operation Parachute,” Dent Elementary; third place: Elijah Gori, “Let’s Race,” Lammersville Elementary, Lammersville.

THIRD THROUGH FIFTH GRADE. First-place science: Jordan Prawira, “Egg-cellent Parachute,” Altamont Elementary, Lammersville; first-place engineering: Genevieve Casazza, “Preventing a Water Pipe From Freezing Without Electricity,” Dent; second place: Mathilde Beckman-Forman, “Superhydrophobic Coating,” Wicklund Elementary, Lammersville; third place: Jake Bowen, “The Effects of Video Games on Children’s Eyesight,” Bella Vista Christian Academy.

SIXTH THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE. First-place science: Jacqueline Prawira, “Coffee-Doh Battery,” Altamont Elementary; first-place engineering: Anna Matthews, “Going Green – Water Detector,” Elkhorn School, Lodi Unified School District; second place: Alicia and Ashlyn Roice, “Cure for the Burning Heart,” Altamont Elementary; third place: Ashley Teele, “Save the Avocado!” Bethany Elementary.

NINTH THROUGH 12TH GRADE. First place: Baani Minhas, “The Effect of Honey on Shelf Life and Vitamin C Content of Fruits,” Mountain House High, Lammersville.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS. Sanskriti Singh, “Does the Ocean Ever Freeze?” Altamont Elementary; Miles McCarthy, “Filtration Station,” Tom Hawkins Elementary School, Jefferson Elementary School District; Bernice Lozada, “Recycling Gray Water,” Questa Elementary, Lammersville.

Donors to the event were Synopsys Outreach Foundation, Stockton Symphony Association, San Joaquin Audubon Society, Acorn Naturalists and the San Joaquin County Office of Education Educational Foundation.
