Scholarships offered in fields of art, natural sciences
The North Modesto Kiwanis Club and the Central Sierra Audubon Society are accepting applications for their annual scholarship awards.
Up to $3,000 in Al Barr Memorial Scholarships will be awarded. The program, now in its 16th year, is for Stanislaus County high school graduates and Modesto Junior College students who are enrolled in or have been accepted by four-year colleges or universities as graphic communications or art majors.
Barr was a past president and 30-year member of the North Modesto Kiwanis Club, which directs the scholarship fund. Barr, a former newspaper graphic artist and award-winning watercolorist, died in 2000.
The application deadline is April 15. Requirements include a completed application, two samples of original artwork, two or more letters of recommendation, a copy of current high school or college transcripts and a one-page letter on why the applicant seeks a career in graphic communications or art.
Students may download application information at the North Modesto Kiwanis Club website, www.northmodestokiwanis.org, and go to the scholarship page. For more information, call Ron Wilkinson of Nishihara/Wilkinson Design in Turlock, 209-668-7627.
The Audubon Society is offering two $2,000 scholarships to students studying natural sciences. The Edye Dingman scholarships are offered to students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.
Preference will be given to graduates from high schools in Calaveras and Tuolumne counties or those who have attended Columbia College and will have completed two years of undergraduate college work with a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average.
The application deadline is March 15. Applications and information are available at www.centralsierraaudubon.org. Completed application packets must include an application form, copy of college transcripts, two letters of recommendation and a one-page personal essay. Application packets must be mailed to the Central Sierra Audubon Society.
Scholarship winners will be eligible for a second year scholarship, but must reapply and will be considered along with other applicants.
