Saturday is Science Day at Stanislaus State
Science Day will be Saturday at California State University, Stanislaus, a chance to see snakes slither, touch fossils, try out GPS, gain CSI skills and ask “Why?” nonstop.
Faculty and science students will be on hand to amaze and explain. Kids – the more curious, the better – can wander among free, hands-on activities and demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Plant seeds in the greenhouse and net insects and water wigglers by the pond along the Trans-California Pathway being developed at the southeast corner of campus. Give a wave to Jefferson the giant tortoise as you pass – chances are he can be spotted not far away when walking back.
The action will center on Naraghi Hall and the Science 1 Building behind it, with dozens of scientific discoveries waiting to widen young eyes.
How do fireworks turn red, white or blue?
Is black a color?
What do cells like? BTW – what is DNA?
Are our best friends four-legged or six-legged?
How do – gasp! – lungs work?
Why is the sky blue and the sunset red?
Make and take a CSI science kit. Learn what nurses do. Get an inside look at the digestive system by making poo – yes, poo.
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, get heart savvy. Learn CPR on a real dummy and touch the dependable pumper of a departed bovine.
Helping to make the day kid-friendly are all these groups and university departments: Enochs High Bio Technology Club, Biology Student Association, Pre Health Society, Math and SIAM Clubs, SPS Club, Student Nurses Association, Warriors Chemistry Club, Alliance for Minority Participation, biological sciences, Central Valley Math and Science Alliance, chemistry, child development, computer science, cognitive science, geology, joint engineering program, mathematics, nursing, physics and physical sciences, psychology and the Trans-California Pathways Project.
