Conscientious spellers take the prize

Young spellers bested conscientious, idiosyncrasy, irreplaceable and seismologist to move on to the state competition.

Gloria Park, a sixth-grader at Julien School in Turlock, and Leah Raby, a fifth-grader at Paradise School west of Modesto, were the winners of the Stanislaus County Elementary Spelling Championship, held Wednesday at Gregori High School. The two will compete in the state championship in Stockton on April 18.

Lee Qin, a fifth-grader at Apricot Valley School in Patterson, was named alternate should either Gloria or Leah be unable to attend.

The event was sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education, the Education Foundation of Stanislaus County and Wells Fargo. Retired educator Harry Bakker served as spelling master, assisted by 45 volunteer proctors. Some 74 students from 40 schools participated.
