Modesto students salute those who served
It was like a little USO show. As it’s done in years past, Lakewood Elementary School in Modesto rolled out the figurative red, white and blue carpet for veterans on Friday, in advance of Tuesday’s Veterans Day holiday. The school organizes the event each year to show appreciation for our veterans’ commitment and dedication to our country, said Becky Fortuna, public information officer for Modesto City Schools. Lakewood students and staff from every grade level took part. To an audience of perhaps 25 veterans, children recited the Constitution’s Preamble and sang the national anthem and the song “Hero.” Veterans were invited to introduce themselves and address the youngsters, and at the conclusion of the ceremony, the students gave the veterans handmade gifts.
