MJC ORCHESTRA DAY

Nine Stanislaus County high schools will perform at Modesto Junior College’s High School Orchestra Day from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 6 in the Performing and Media Arts Center on the east campus, 435 College Ave. Anne Martin, MJC Community Orchestra conductor and string professor, will host the free event. Free parking will be on South Campus Way and in parking lots 104 and 105, both near the music building on Stoddard Avenue. MJC music major Anthony Houth will be the soloist on Haydn’s Concerto for cello in C major, accompanied by the Teachers’ Chamber Ensemble. Participating high schools are Beyer, directed by Marcos Rivera; Downey, directed by Joanne Neuffer; Davis, directed by Mark Davila; Turlock, led by Joe Tovar; Pitman, led by Don Grishaw; Enochs, directed by Phil Vallejo; Modesto directed by Matt Cover; Gregori, led by Dan Bryan; and Johansen, led by Brad Hart. APP CONTEST FOR KIDS

Middle and high school student teams can compete in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge, dreaming up ideas and creating concepts for mobile apps to solve problems in their schools and communities. Past smartphone apps can be downloaded for free in the Google Play Store. The Media Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology will be available to help teams develop their app concepts. FREE HOMEWORK HOTLINE OPEN

Students at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., are available on the college’s Homework Hotline five nights a week through the school year to provide free math and science tutoring to students in grades six through 12. The hotline has fielded 500,000 calls, online chats and email resources since opening in 1991. Hours are 4 to 7 p.m. PST, Sunday through Thursday, through May. Call (877) 275-7673. Submit questions by email at www.askrose.org. Tutors do not give answers, but are trained to guide callers through homework problems. They have access to current math and science textbooks. The service is funded by the Rose-Hulman and Lilly Endowment Inc.
