Many school zones in Modesto could get 15 mph limits. How to comment to council
The Modesto City Council could take a final vote Tuesday night on new speed limits for many streets. They would be just 15 mph on about 80 stretches near schools.
The change reflects an emphasis on pedestrian safety in Modesto and elsewhere. The school zones, enforced when students are present, are now mostly 25 mph.
The council approved the changes at its June 2 meeting. Because it is an ordinance, a second reading is required. It would take effect July 23, a few weeks before the new school year.
The matter is part of the consent calendar, usually approved without discussion. The public can ask that an item be pulled for comment.
Before a speed limit can be changed under state law, a traffic expert must survey current driver behavior. Most of Modesto’s streets would see no change, including 25 mph in neighborhoods and faster on wider routes.
The city staff proposal also would slow Claus Road from 50 to 45 mph between Scenic Drive and Yosemite Boulevard. Claus ranges from four to six lanes and has a foot and bicycle bridge at Johansen High School.
The staff recommends a few speed-limit increases. Carver Road would go from 25 to 30 mph between Briggsmore Avenue and North Ninth Street. Boosts from 35 to 40 mph are urged for Prescott Road between Standiford Avenue and Rumble Road and for Dale Road between Pelandale Avenue and Standiford.
The council will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, in the basement chambers at 1010 10th St. The public can watch over Zoom but not comment. Emailed input will be received until two hours before the meeting. Details on remote participation at on the council website.
