Student hospitalized after being found unresponsive in pool of Modesto high school
A student was hospitalized Thursday afternoon after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool at Davis High School in Modesto, according to school officials and first responders.
Modesto Fire Department crews were dispatched at 12:19 p.m. to the Rumble Road school for a report of a possible drowning, Modesto Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Joe Spani told The Bee.
When firefighters arrived, the student already had been removed from the pool and school staff members were performing lifesaving measures, Spani said.
“The juvenile was conscious and breathing, evaluated by MFD, and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance,” Spani said.
Modesto Police Department officers also responded to the school. A watch commander told The Bee that the student was already out of the pool and receiving medical aid from staff members by the time officers arrived.
Police are not investigating the incident as a criminal matter, the watch commander said.
In a message sent to Davis High staff Thursday afternoon, Principal Michael Shroyer said a teacher found a student in the swimming pool during a physical education aquatics class. The student was initially unresponsive.
According to the email, the teacher removed the student from the pool, began CPR and called paramedics.
“What we know at this time is that the student is now responsive and receiving medical care,” Shroyer wrote.
The principal also noted that other students witnessed the incident and said counseling and social-emotional support resources were being made available on campus.
The Bee has reached out to Modesto City Schools for additional information regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident, including supervision and safety protocols during the class.
