American Heritage Essays Sought

How much can and should schools limit student expression in cyberspace? That is the topic for this year's American Heritage Scholarship Series lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Martin G. Petersen Event Center, 720 12th St., Modesto.

Debating the topic will be Bernard James, a Pepperdine Law School professor, and Linda Lye, staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, arguing the free speech side.

The free lecture is aimed at high school juniors and seniors, who are invited to participate in an essay competition for scholarships.

The essays, of up to 2,000 words, are due Oct. 28.

More information is available at www.stancoe.org; click on "programs" and then "American Heritage." The scholarship program, in its 10th year, is sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education, Modesto City Schools, The Modesto Bee and modbee.com.
