Beyer High’s $8.5 million science renovation set to begin, backed by Measure L
Construction is set to begin this summer on an $8.5 million renovation of the science building at Beyer High School.
This project will convert 14,500 square feet of outdated facilities into modern science labs, adaptable learning spaces and accessible restrooms, designed to support hands-on, STEM-focused education. It is funded by Measure L, a bond measure approved by voters in 2022 to upgrade high school campuses throughout Modesto.
“Our students deserve learning spaces that match the caliber of their curiosity and ambition,” said Modesto City Schools Superintendent Sara Noguchi in a press release. “This project enhances instruction and represents our community’s belief in the power of public education and the importance of preparing students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).”
The renovation will expand lab space, improve lighting with new energy-efficient windows and install modern lab stations. Classrooms also will get movable furniture to support flexible and collaborative learning. In addition, staff and students will benefit from updated restrooms that meet American with Disabilities Act standards, as well as new prep rooms, storage and office space for teachers.
“These upgrades aren’t just about buildings, they’re about building opportunities,” Beyer High Principal Sarah Cox said in the news release. “Our students deserve facilities that match their potential, and this new science wing will open doors to hands-on experiences that prepare them for college, careers and beyond. We’re incredibly grateful to our community for supporting Measure L and helping make this vision a reality. It’s something our entire school and community can be proud of.”
This renovation is part of a broader campus modernization effort at Beyer High. Measure L funds have also supported the recent installation of solar shades in the parking lot, perimeter fencing and a new track and field facility with synthetic turf.
“Our new track and field facility is a testament to the district’s commitment to providing top-notch resources for our students,” Cox said. “It enhances our athletic programs and is a hub for community engagement and school spirit.”
Alongside the science wing upgrade, which will be completed in one phase, the district will also build a new permanent restroom facility near the portable classrooms on the north side of campus and flatten the tiered floor in the forum building to improve accessibility.
California Design West is the architect for the project, and Boyer Construction will serve as the general contractor.
