The big yellow buses are hitting the roads, with Modesto City Schools, Newman-Crows Landing, Riverbank and Roberts Ferry students back in class Monday. Schools in Oakdale and Valley Home started Aug. 6, but the bulk of schoolchildren in Stanislaus County start class this week. Tuesday will be Day One for kids in Ceres, Empire and Waterford. Wednesday begins the school year for students in the Ripon, Sylvan, Escalon, Stanislaus Union, Chatom, Denair, Hughson and Salida school districts. Turlock students can sleep in until Thursday, as can those in the Paradise, Hickman, Gratton, Knights Ferry and Keyes school districts. Later starts will be Aug. 18 for Hart-Ransom students and Aug. 19 for most kids in Tuolumne County. Aug. 24 will start fall classes for Shiloh School and area colleges: Modesto Junior College, Columbia College and California State University, Stanislaus.
