New seventh-graders got an opportunity to learn while having fun this summer.

Students heading to Mark Twain Junior High in Modesto or Waterford Junior High in Waterford in August participated in the two-week “Road Trip … Journey to Success” program, held in Ceres. The Stanislaus County Office of Education program aims to give youths a chance to bone up on academics while doing high-interest activities.

According to the Office of Education’s website, the program is meant to “incorporate field trips to businesses and college campuses, provide ‘soft’ business skills, anti-tobacco education and more. The most important piece is to connect these students with caring adults on campus and involve them in clubs with an adviser and then follow them through to high school graduation.”

Thursday’s Road Trip agenda at the Stanislaus County Institute of Learning focused on creativity, with time spent tie-dying shirts and participating in yoga, break-dancing, origami and poetry activities with Modesto Junior College professor Sam Pierstorff.
